Bethlehem University 40th Anniversary

Bethlehem University 40th Anniversary

Bethlehem University, Palestine:

Greetings to Canon Foley, Father Kane, Sister Eileen and the parishioners of St Augustine’s

I write to you today because forty years ago this week, on 1 October 1973, one hundred and twelve students walked onto campus to begin Bethlehem University. In four short decades, the university has grown to include a current enrolment of over 3,000 students in nine buildings located on campus and at several extension sites.  It is a time to celebrate and to be thankful. Thankful to God for the enormous blessing this place has been to so many people, thankful to those people who had the foresight and courage to work to establish Bethlehem University; thankful to those who have worked over these forty years to make Bethlehem University what it is today; thankful to the many donors who have enabled Bethlehem University to survive, and above all, thankful for the more than 14,000 alumni who have studied at Bethlehem University and who have influenced so many people as a result.

On Sunday, 6 October 2013, at 2:00 p.m., Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotta, Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine and Chancellor of Bethlehem University, will preside at a special 40th Jubilee Mass to be conducted in the University’s Auditorium. No matter where you are on Sunday, I invite you to join us for a moment of reflection on how God’s blessings have brought us to this point.

As we remember the beginning of Bethlehem University, I would ask you to continue to pray that, as people did over the past forty years, we who are now here will be open to God’s Spirit and work to serve the Palestinian people in the best way we can.

Best wishes and thanks,
Brother Peter, Vice Chancellor.
