A Holy Hour: Praying for Priestly Vocations

With the approach of the Church’s week dedicated to praying for vocations (Vocations Awareness Week 15-22 Sept.) and our own annual Diocesan Vocations Mass in the Cathedral next Monday 16th September at 7pm it seems an opportune time to pray as a parish for this special intention.

St. Augustine’s will host a Holy hour of Prayer & Adoration in the Church from 7.00pm – 8.00pm this Sunday 15th September.

Appropriately the Holy Hour will be led by a newly ordained Deacon, Rev. Nick Welsh of the Archdiocese of St. Andrew’s & Edinburgh. Please God, Deacon Nick will be ordained to the priesthood in the summer of next year together with his classmate, Rev. Martin Delaney of our own Diocese of Motherwell. Deacon Nick will lead us in prayer and preach on the importance of nurturing and supporting priestly vocations within our homes and parishes. As well as Deacon Nick we will also be joined by visiting priests and several seminarians from the Pontifical Scots College in Rome.

The evening will begin with Solemn Vespers (Evening Prayer of the Church) and will then continue with a period of silent Adoration and prayer; a homily from Deacon Nick; hymns and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Parishioners from Coatbridge and elsewhere are invited to join us for this special Holy Hour to show our prayerful support for those currently studying for the priesthood, and to encourage more men to answer the Lord’s call ‘to follow Him’. In recent years we have become only too aware of the need to ask God’s help in ‘sending more labourers into the vineyard’, and in the first place this is offered as a pressing spiritual concern, shared by the entire Catholic community. We may offer helpful practical solutions to inspire more vocations but none are as fruitful as committing ourselves prayerfully to this intention.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to St. Augustine’s as together we pray for the gift of priestly vocations!

O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Harvest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to gather the fruits of Your labour in the priestly ministry; preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of you. Open the hearts of Your children that they may discern Your Holy Will; inspire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ. Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers and grant Your Church’s needs, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
