A Coatbridge parishioner, Antoinette Parr, has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours list for services to NHS Scotland, to the Scout Movement, to her parish (St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, Coatbridge), and the Diocese of Motherwell.
Antoinette has worked in the NHS for over 40 years whilst volunteering so much of her free time in various roles through her parish, diocese and the Scouts movement.
On hearing the news of her honour Antoinette said: “This award is so special because it combines my day job in the NHS with where my heart lies in the Church and volunteering with young people who are our future.”
“My reason for being is to help, especially children and those who are vulnerable. That is why I have given of my time to volunteering in my parish, helping where and when needed. At the same time, I’ve tried my very best to influence and support pastoral care and development. Volunteering is not a chore; it is a real joy, and for sure I am very lucky.”
Antoinette’s Catholic faith is the cornerstone of her life, guiding her daily actions and inspiring her to give so generously of herself. She said: “My faith is my life and inspires me to do so much; without it, I would not be who I am. My Parish is my extended family, and the time I give to it breathes energy into me. It’s exciting, busy, uplifting; it’s a living community. This is my life, and I love doing what I do. I thank God every day for directing me!”
Commenting on the award, Bishop Toal of Motherwell Diocese said: “I add my own congratulations and that of the diocesan community on this deserved honour. Antoinette has made an exceptional contribution to our diocese over many years, especially in the important and evolving work of safeguarding. May the Lord continue to bless her in her service and witness”.
Fr. Michael Kane, Parish Priest of St. Augustine’s Church, Coatbridge, said: “We are all incredibly proud of Antoinette. She is at the beating heart of daily life at our parish, working in our youth and pastoral planning ministries, safeguarding, pass-keeping, co-ordinating our welcome ministry, and visiting the sick with Holy Communion. The only person truly surprised by this honour was Antoinette herself! Her dedication to our parish over so many years is an inspiration to us all and a real witness to faith in action. We hope her example will inspire others to share their gifts and talents for the benefit of others.
It is hoped that a special Mass will be held in St. Augustine’s, Coatbridge at a later date to mark Antoinette’s honour and to give thanks for her decades of dedicated and selfless service.
