NEW Termly update from St Augustine’s Choir

Autumn Term 2019 proved to be another busy, successful and hard-working time for St Augustine’s Choir. The main focus of the term was the introduction of new congregational Mass parts and new anthems for the weekly Solemn Mass at 12 noon, along with a huge focus in preparation for the Christmas liturgies and concert. Works by exciting contemporary composers such as Will Todd, Philip Stopford and Mark Wilberg were added to the repertoire, along with a number of the more traditional Latin polyphony in which the Choir prides itself, and other previously sung material by composers such as Bruckner and Sibelius.

Key events for the term included the Ordination of our very own Deacon David Harper, which included a now relatively rare but nonetheless beautiful and memorable rendition of the Missa de Angelis, the annual Remembrance Mass and a Ladies’ Guild concert in Airdrie during November. The year 2019 also saw Elaine Trower complete an amazing thirty years as Choir Leader and there was there was much joy at a surprise party thrown in her honour, to which all present and past members were invited, along with Elaine’s predecessor, John Pitcathley and other organists who have helped the Choir at various points, including Paul Carrol, Greg McHugh and Des McLean. It was also the Choir’s privilege once again to perform carols for the patients and staff at St Andrew’s Hospice, Airdrie, with whom we have a longstanding friendship.

We are looking forward to new challenges in 2020 and will be getting fully into the swing of preparation for Lent and Easter from early January.  As ever, we are always open to welcoming new members – there is no need to be able to read music (very few of our members do!) – if you are interested, please either chat to Elaine or any Choir member at the end of any Mass, or indeed come along to a rehearsal: these occur at 7.30pm every Monday night in the Church Sacristy
