Many of you will know that in recent times priestly vocations in Scotland have been struggling. This year the Diocese of Motherwell celebrated only one ordination, Fr. James Travers. This new priest entered formation later in life and studied at seminary in England.
I am happy to announce that Bishop Toal has appointed Fr. Travers as the Assistant Priest here at St. Augustine’s. Fr. Travers will take-up his post on Saturday 1st August. This is the first appointment for Fr. Travers who was ordained to the priesthood earlier in the month in his home parish, Sacred Heart in Bellshill. It also creates a somewhat unique situation, in that St. Augustine’s now has three resident priests.
Fr. Travers will combine parish work with a chaplaincy in Monklands hospital in Airdrie. He will also assist in the local Catholic schools.
We look forward to welcoming Fr. Travers as he begins his priestly ministry in our parish. St. Augustine’s has had a fine tradition of welcoming newly ordained priests over the years. Please extend that warm welcome to Fr. Travers when he joins us in the near future.
God bless, Fr. Kane
