 The Baptism of the Lord

Baptism: the Doorway to the Sacraments

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls the events of our Lord’s Baptism in the River Jordan at the hands of John the Baptist. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons and daughters of God.

The baptism that John offered was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and called them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the “substance of our flesh” and was recognized outwardly like ourselves, He was absolutely sinless and pure. He conferred upon the water the power of the true sacrament of Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world.

In today’s Gospel we hear the Father’s voice from heaven. This shows that Jesus of Nazareth is the eternal Son and the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove shows the Trinitarian nature of the Christian God.

The same Spirit, that descended on the water of the River Jordan, also hovered over the waters during the first creation. (Gen 1:2) Therefore, the Baptism in the Jordan presents yet another truth: that Jesus has started a new creation. He is the second man or the last Adam, that comes to repair the first Adam’s guilt. He does this as “the Lamb of God that takes away our sins”.

This Sunday we give thankful praise to God for the gift of our own baptism, and we renew our baptismal promises during Holy Mass this weekend. May we always remain true to those commitments in the daily practice of our faith.

Parishioners wishing to sign-up for the Gift-aid scheme are asked to go to the sacristy after Mass to fill-out a Gift-aid declaration. This allows the parish to reclaim an extra 25p on every £1 donated by a tax-payer.

Any young person (primary 4 and above) wishing to join our group of altar-servers are asked to speak to Fr. Kane after Mass this weekend. This can be an excellent way for our young people to show greater participation at Mass. Servers should be willing to serve on the altar each week at the Mass they usually attend. Training and parental consent forms will be given to new servers.

Anyone interested in joining a pilgrimage group to the Holy Land is asked to contact Sadie Polockus at St. John the Baptist’s Parish in Uddingston on 01698 334373. 10 spaces are still available. The dates are approx 14th/26th September 2014. Dates will be confirmed by the end of the year when flights are announced. The group is staying at the Notre Dame and Ron Beach. All accommodation/flights/transfers/tips/entrance fees are included. Price should be in the region of £1660/1700. A £300pp deposit is required to secure a place. Speak to Fr. Kane for more information.

From next weekend parishioners will be able to sign-up as prayer partners to our young Confirmation Candidates. This is an opportunity to pray for our Candidates in their journey towards the Sacrament and beyond. From next Sunday feel free to sign your name against a Candidate on the board in the porch of the Church. Each Candidate can have a maximum of two prayer partners.

Candidates for this Sacrament are reminded that the usual 10am Mass register will be taken this weekend. Candidates are also asked to remain in the body of the Church during the readings (i.e., not in the Children’s Liturgy Group in the Hall). This is a sign of their maturing that they now remain in the Church for the duration of Holy Mass.

Parishioners are invited to support two coffee mornings in aid of two worthy charities being supported by our Confirmation Candidates. Donations of home baking would be greatly appreciated. Donations of books, CD’s/DVD’s, toys, bottles, tombola items and raffle prizes would also be gratefully received. The events will take place in our Parish Hall. Details are as follows:
