Solemnity of Christ the King (C)

Sunday 24th November 2013

   Charity Number: SCO11041

The Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope  Pius  XI  in  1925  as  an  antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man’s thinking and living, and organizes his life  as  if God did not exist. Pope Benedict Emeritus taught wisely on the significance of today’s Solemnity:

“On this feast day, we rejoice together in the reign of Christ the King over the whole world. He is the one who removes all that hinders reconciliation, justice and peace. We are reminded that true royalty does not consist in a show of power, but in the humility of service; not in the oppression of the weak, but in the ability to protect them and to lead them to life in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10). Christ reigns from the Cross and, with his arms open wide, he embraces all the peoples of the world and draws them into unity. Through the Cross, he breaks down the walls of division, he reconciles us with each other and with the Father.”

Pope Benedict XVI, Homily on the Solemnity of Christ the King, 2011

This week’s second collection at all Masses will go towards this urgent SCIAF appeal. Please give generously to help our brothers and sisters in need.

Craft Club

Our Craft Club is now running on Tuesday evenings in Our Hall from 7pm.  The team is busily preparing items for our Christmas Fayre.  Everyone welcome.

Any young person (16-25yrs) interested in joining a new Youth SVDP Group in the parish are asked to attend a short meeting in the Parish Hall on Tuesday 26th November at 7.00pm. Caritas pupils are especially encouraged to attend. Speak to Fr. Kane or Lucy Kirkland for more information.

Parents are reminded of the importance of ensuring their children attend Holy Mass each week. This is especially true of children who are preparing to receive Sacraments in the near future. The 10am Family Mass is most appropriate for our young parishioners, not least because of the Children’s Liturgy groups. It is encouraging to see the increased attendance of families in recent weeks and we are grateful to parents who prioritise the Sunday commitment each week.

Parishioners wishing to sign-up for the Gift-aid scheme are asked to go to the sacristy after Mass to fill-out a Gift-aid declaration. This allows the parish to reclaim an extra 25p on every £1 donated by a tax-payer.

As part of our fundraising for the Hall renovation parishioners will be given the opportunity to ‘sponsor a roof tile’. The cost of each tile is £10 which includes the gift of a limited edition parish mug. If you would like to support this project please tick-off one of the 400 tiles on the display poster in the Hall and simply collect your mug! The £10 cost of covering the tile and mug can be handed-in to the parish stall. St. Augustine’s pens are also available for purchase at £3 each.

A former pupil of St. Augustine’s Junior Secondary (1961-63) has been in touch with the parish looking for photographs of the old school building. If you can help please forward old photographs to the Chapel House. Originals will be returned.

Bishop Toal has issued a letter concerning the Church’s implementation of guidelines for the protection of children and vulnerable adults within our Catholic communities. Please pick-up a copy from the porch as you leave Mass.

This week’s Second Collection will be taken-up for the SCIAF Philippines Appeal. Please be as generous as you can in supporting this vital cause.

Sunday Brunch @ Our Hall finishes this weekend and will start again in January.  Thank you all for supporting this event throughout the weeks, and helping to raise over £4,400 for our Hall Renovation Fund.

Packs of Christmas cards, featuring our Church crib scene, will be on sale in the stall from next weekend. Please make every effort to send religious rather than secular cards this Christmas. This is a simple way ‘of keeping Christ in Christmas’.
