Last Sunday following his weekly Angelus address Pope Francis announced a Day of Fasting & Prayer for peace in the Midle East. (For the full address click here.) This day will be celebrated on Saturday 7th September 2013 (tomorrow). On this day the Holy Father invites Christians “and all people of goodwill” to fast and pray particularly for a peaceful resolution to the present conflict in Syria. (See video footage of the address below).[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1qh36Wqkew]
Taking-up his invitation the clergy of St. Augustine’s encourage our parishioners to fast and pray for this special intention. Fasting on bread and water may be underatken by those in good health who are under sixty-five years old. Others may wish to offer some other, lesser sacrifice on this day as a sign of our fraternal concern and solidarity with the people caught-up in this terrible war and conflict. Incidentally, the Syria conflict has already resulted in an estimated 1 million children refugees.
The parish will also formally offer an additional period of prayer on this day. There will be a Vigil of Adoration from immediately after the Saturday Vigil Mass (approx. 7.15pm) until 11pm. Night Prayer of the Church, concluding with Benediction will take place at 10.30pm, with parishioners encouraged to attend this Divine Office of the Church.
Please make every effort to attend Adoration for a period of time over the course of this special Vigil of Prayer. Also, please ‘spread the word’ to family members, friends and neighbours who otherwise may not have access to our online posts.
For those able to devote a specific hour to adoration please email Fr. Kane to inform him of your chosen time (i.e., 7.15-8pm / 8-9pm / 9-10pm / 10-11pm). This ensures that there are always a small group of people in the Church at any given time. The email address is email@example.com Otherwise, you can post a message on Facebook. Just click on the link on the right sidebar.
We very much look forward to seeing you at St. Augustine’s as we join the world in praying for peace. As ever, we seek the special intercession of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, that on the Vigil of her Birthday, the world will experience a new birth of peace and goodwill between God and man and among men.
